When you go on holiday, you are sometimes stuck for places to eat, but thanks to new technologies, we can look up all types of restaurants on the internet, from hamburger and pizza places to the gourmet Michelin star restaurant or the most popular of the site.
I do not consider myself a gastronomy expert by no means, but in this mini guide, I will tell you about my top 5.
1. La Bolera in Anero
They offer a daily set menu with a wide variety of starters and mains, everything homemade, including hearty stews to comfort you on a bad day. Everything is delicious, but if I had to choose a couple, I’d say the bean stews, both the red bean and mountain stew, and also the fish soup. The service is quick and very attentive. You rarely need to book a table, but you might want to unless you don’t mind waiting if you get there at peak times. The set menus are about 16 euros on weekdays and 22 on weekends.
2. Peña Candil (Santander)
Without a doubt, one of my favourites, due to the food and the service. If you like good fresh fish or a tasty rice dish, this is your place. They offer fresh fish (red porgy, turbot or john dory), which are all spectacular. I enjoy all the rice dishes, but the lobster or the pork cheek options are the best. I’d recommend you order several dishes to try and then a main. The waiters will guide you. Try the mussels in “barquereña” sauce!
Don’t forget to book your table! This is important for this one. They have a set menu during the week but only offer a la carte on weekends and bank holidays. Expect to pay about 35 euros per person.
3. Las Ruedas (Treto)
Another restaurant that serves homemade food and where I discovered stewed octopus is this one. It is a family-run place that has been around for ever.
During the week, they have a set menu and a la carte on weekends and bank holidays. The perfect spot to recharge your batteries after a route through the Buciero Mountain or the Joyel marshes. As I said, the stewed octopus is delicious, but so are the trotters, although I’m sure everything is good here.
The portions are pretty generous. It has become popular recently, so I recommend booking a table, especially on the weekends. The price is about 30 euros per person.
4. Somo Parque (Somo)
It is the restaurant at the Camping Soto Parque, which specialises in hamburgers. It won the 2021 hamburger award with its “Montañesa” (mountain-style).
After a day on the beach or a stroll around the Loredo cliffs, finishing it on the terrace or inside the restaurant is a great ending.
They are not the typical lettuce and tomato burgers; they use ribeye steak. Mouthwatering! The price is about 15 euros per person.
5. La Modernista
Close to la Casonia is this restaurant that serves traditional, homemade food, where I would highlight the stews, particularly the bean stews. Ribeye steak, fillet steak or baby squids, among other dishes.
They serve generous portions at very reasonable prices. You can either choose the set menu or dine a la carte.
I recommend booking a table.
There are obviously many more that I have not mentioned, but I will do some other time.
Enjoy!
